Introduction

This cognitive bias is one that occurs when our overall impression of a person, company, or product influences our evaluation of its specific characteristics. In other words, if we have a positive opinion of a person, we are more likely to attribute positive qualities to that person, even if it is not justified by the facts.

Description

The Halo effect is used in mass manipulation techniques to influence people’s opinions about a person or an organisation. The aim is to Crete an impression of a person. company or product that is favourable. Once this is established it is very difficult for people to see negative information.

Example

If a company has a positive image among the public, then it will be easy to use this image to influence peoples’ opinions of its products even if they are not of good quality.

It is used often by politicians to use their favourable image amongst the public to push policies that may not be good.
