Introduction

Bots (short for “robots”) are automated accounts or software programs designed to perform specific tasks on social media platforms.
Trolls are human users (or occasionally bots programmed to act like humans) who deliberately provoke, harass, or disrupt online conversations to elicit emotional reactions, create conflict, or derail discussions.
Description
Characteristics of Bots:
  • Automation: Operate without constant human input, using scripts to post or engage.
  • Scale: Can perform actions rapidly and in large volumes (e.g., thousands of retweets).
  • Anonymity: Often use generic or fake profiles to hide their automated nature.
  • Purpose-Driven: Designed for specific goals, such as amplifying content, inflating metrics, or spreading narratives.

Characteristic of Trolls

  • Intentional Provocation: Post inflammatory, offensive, or controversial content to upset others.
  • Disruption: Aim to derail productive discussions or shift focus to irrelevant or divisive topics.
  • Anonymity or Pseudonymity: Often hide behind anonymous accounts or fake personas to avoid accountability.
  • Engagement-Driven: Thrive on reactions (e.g., angry replies, arguments) to sustain their activity.

Examples

  • Bots: During a political event, thousands of X accounts with generic profiles retweet a hashtag like #Vote2025, inflating its trend status.
  • Trolls: An X user repeatedly posts inflammatory replies under a public figure’s tweet, sparking heated arguments and derailing the conversation
