Introduction

An appeal to authority in propaganda involves leveraging the credibility, status, or perceived expertise of an individual or institution to persuade an audience to accept a claim, regardless of the claim’s actual merit. This tactic exploits people’s tendency to trust respected figures or institutions without critically examining the evidence.

Description

This is done in 5 ways:

Invoking Credible Figures:This is when celebrities, authority figures are used to endorse something.
Selective or Misleading Use: the person endorsing something is not actually an expert in the topic they are endorsing.
Suppression of scrutiny:this implies that the endorsement of the celebrity or experts means no further questions are needed.
Emotional Manipulation: by using a well known face to endorse an item or fact this creates a trust in what the person has said.
Exaggeration of Consensus: People are told that ‘everyone’ is doing something thus ensuring further support.
Example
This is most often used in political propaganda: A government might claim, “Our top military experts confirm this war is necessary,” to justify military action, even if the experts’ views are misrepresented or lack consensus
